The Happiest Person And Other Stories

 The Hungry Beggar

One day a hungry beggar went to a farmer's house to beg for something to eat. By the time the beggar went there the farmer's wife had already prepared lunch and was waiting for her husband to come home. The farmer's little children were playing in front of the house. The farmer arrived and his little children hugged him. The farmer's wife greeted him with a bountiful of smile.

The beggar on his way back home with the parcel of food the farmer's wife offered him thought , "Is this life? The farmer leads a happy life with his children and wife. He has a beautiful house. He has a plenty of food to eat. He must be the happiest person in this village."

Meanwhile, the farmer while having his lunch told his wife," We cannot manage our fields unless we have some more money. The cost of labour is very high. I'll go to the village headman's house and ask him if he could lend me some money."

That evening the farmer visited the village headman's house. The farmer told his problem to the village headman. He agreed to lend the farmer some money on interest. The village headman went inside the house and brought a bag full of money. He counted the amount the farmer wanted and put the balance back in the bag.

The farmer thought on his way back home , "Well, truly , the village headman must be the happiest person in this village. He has got a lot of money. I wish I could be a village headman! Then I could lead a wealthy and happy life like our village headman."

One day, the village headman decided to buy some clothes for his wife and children. The shop was a big one with a lot of workers. The shopkeeper was engaged in a telephone conversation while the village headman was selecting the clothes. He overheard the shopkeeper talking about some consignment of textiles he had ordered from some foreign country. The village headman thought on his way home, "The shopkeeper must be the happiest person in the village. He has transactions with others countries as well. I wish I could be a shopkeeper like him!"

The shopkeeper was such a busy person that he had very little time to spend with his family. His wife was very unhappy about her husband. So, they often quarreled with each other. The shopkeeper decided to get some advice for this problem from the chief monk of the village temple. The chief monk was known for his wisdom and piousness.

When he went to the temple, the chief monk was delivering a sermon to a group of villagers. The shopkeeper also sat behind the crowd and listened to the sermon. The monk had no hurry to finish the sermon. With a pleasant smile, he was explaining the crowd the insatiability of all human beings. "Each one has his own share of problems", said the monk. "Even I face a numerous problems. The biggest problem at my hand is helping the whole mankind get rid of their problems."
